How Google AI Overviews changed organic search

Direct answer Google AI Overviews compress more informational queries into a synthesised AI answer at the top of the search results. The effect on organic CTR has been uneven — significant compression on definitional and how-to queries, much less on transactional and brand queries — and AI Overviews themselves heavily source from sites that rank organically.

Which queries are most affected?

Definitional queries ('what is X'), how-to queries with simple answers, and basic comparison queries see the most compression. Users get the answer directly and click through less often.

Transactional queries ('buy', 'pricing', 'demo'), brand queries, and complex comparison queries are largely unaffected — users still need to evaluate alternatives, see pricing detail, and reach the company directly.

What does the data show on CTR?

Independent industry studies (Authoritas, BrightEdge, Semrush) have reported organic CTR declines on AI-Overview-affected queries in the range of 10–40%, depending on the query class and the visibility of the AI Overview itself. Brands losing the most traffic tend to be those whose value proposition was 'we have the most comprehensive answer to this informational question'.

What is the strategic response?

Three moves. First, double down on transactional and middle-of-funnel content where AI Overviews compress less and conversion is higher. Second, write top-of-funnel content that AI Overviews will cite — declarative, structured, authoritative — and accept that the click-through rate per impression will be lower. Third, invest more in the brand recognition layer (paid, organic social, PR) that drives direct traffic, since some demand is now captured before the click.

  • Move informational content to a structure AI Overviews will cite
  • Reweight content investment towards transactional and brand queries
  • Invest in direct traffic via brand recognition (paid, social, PR)
  • Track AI engine visibility separately from classical organic

Frequently asked questions

Are AI Overviews shown for every query?

No. Google selectively shows AI Overviews based on query type, intent, and confidence in the synthesised answer. Many queries — particularly transactional and local — still show classical results without an AI Overview.

Can we opt out of AI Overviews?

Not in any practical way. Excluding your content via robots-style controls would also remove you from classical Google indexing, which costs more traffic than AI Overviews compress.

Does AI Overview citation drive traffic?

Yes, but at lower volume than a top-3 organic ranking. Citations also build brand recognition that compounds into direct visits over time.
